Sydney Roosters vs Wests Tigers Preview

Chasing four straight wins for the first time in 2023, Sydney Roosters are right back in with a red-hot finals chance as a clutch of teams around them stumble.

But they can’t take a win over a spirited Wests Tigers – who are still a chance of offloading the wooden spoon – for granted.

The Roosters have been steadily regaining form against modest opposition, racking up comfortably victories over the Sea Eagles (26-16), Dolphins (30-14) and similarly desperate Eels (34-12).

James Tedesco starred with two tries and an assist last week, but he is out with concussion this Saturday.

The Roosters have pulled the trigger on Sam Walker’s return for the first time since Round 9, which bumps in-form Drew Hutchison to 18th man.

Joey Manu replaces Tedesco at fullback with Corey Allan coming in at centre and Jared Warea-Hargreaves returns.

Following a string of plucky displays that gave the likes of Souths, Canberra and the Warriors a genuine scare, the Tigers snapped a 10-match losing streak by edging the Dolphins 24-23 courtesy of a late sideline penalty goal from Api Koroisau.

Koroisau reverts to hooker after playing halfback last week, with Jake Simpkin ruled out and Will Smith donning the No.7 as Luke Brooks remains sidelined.

The Roosters have won 16 of their last 17 against the Tigers, including the last six straight by an average margin of 32.4 points.

This is the clubs’ first encounter since the Roosters’ 72-6 slaughter in Round 23 last year, where Nat Butcher scored four of their 12 tries.

The Roosters are 5-2 at Allianz this season and should have too much firepower for the Tigers, belatedly rectifying a stalling offence with 27.2 points per game in their past five outings.
