Todman Stakes

The Todman Slipper Trial is a Group 2 race for two year old colts and geldings, held each year at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney. This event is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth a total of $300,000 in prize money. The Todman Slipper Trial is a set weights event and an important lead up race for the Golden Slipper Stakes.

The Todman Slipper Trial is held on the same day as two Group 1 events, the Coolmore Stud Classic and the Ranvet Stakes. The winner of this race is made exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes. The Todman Slipper Trial is hosted by the Australian Turf Club, and is the female equivalent of the Reisling Slipper Trial, also held on the same day.

This race often favours classy sprinters due to level weight conditions, with a number of horses going on from this event to bigger and better things. Some of the more noteworthy horses to have won this event include Octagonal in 1995, General Nediym in 1997, Exceed And Excel in 2003, and Charge Forward in 2004. Recent winners include Krupt in 2008, Real Saga in 2009, Masquerader in 2010, Smart Missile in 2011, and Pierro in 2012.

While lots of quality sprinters have taken out this event over the years, there has been a notable lack of Golden Slipper champions. The last horse to win the Todman Slipper Trial and Golden Slipper Stakes double was Tierce in 1991, with 2009 runner-up Phelan Ready winning the Golden Slipper on his next start.

Some of the possible lead up races for the Todman Slipper Trial include the Group 2 Skyline Stakes over 1200 metres at Randwick, the 1200 metre Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes at Randwick, and the 1100 metre Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes, also at Randwick. After racing in the Todman Slipper Trial, horses may go on to the Golden Slipper and the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes.
