Sydney Roosters went into the representative rest outside the Top 8 after losing their last three games to the Raiders, Storm and Eels. None of the trio of defeats were overly concerning, but sitting in ninth with a 7-8 record is an uncomfortable crossroads for the star-studded Tricolours with 10 rounds remaining.

It doesn’t get any easier this week, heading out west to face the 14-1 Penrith Panthers for the second time in six rounds. The Panthers’ comprehensive 32-12 victory at the SCG in Round 11 stretched their winning streak over the Roosters to five matches.

The Panthers disposed of the battling Knights (42-6) and Warriors (40-6) in their last two matches, extending their cover record in 2022 to 11-4.

Penrith’s seven-strong NSW contingent has all been named to play five days after the Origin win in Perth, plus another five Pacific Test reps. Victor Radley returns at lock in a timely boost for the Roosters, whose Origin players came through game two unscathed – but Luke Keary remains sidelined due to concussion.

The Panthers have won 23 of their last 24 games at Penrith Stadium and are giving away a massive 15.5-point start here. The Roosters’ pack is one of the few in the NRL capable of matching strides with the premiers but they appear little chance of crafting a valuable upset if the Panthers field anything near a full-strength team.
