The Parramatta Eels hadn’t played their best football for a month and they knew it heading up to Newcastle in Round 13. With a point to prove and eager to reignite their NRL season, the Eels ran riot to win 40-4. The Wests Tigers produced an impressive result of their own in beating the Panthers 26-6. Although, just how impressive that result is won’t be determined until they build on it and back it up.

Joey Lussick is into the Eels side for Reed Mahoney as the only locked-in change to the 17. Junior Paulo has been named pending his recovery from Origin 1 on Wednesday night. Provided he pulls up right from Origin, Joe Ofahengaue’s inclusion in the 17 is the only change to Michael Maguire’s Tigers side this week.

The Eels have a bit of the 2019 Raiders about them. They’re a quality regular season side and manage to get through this period of the season mostly unaffected by State of Origin. Whether or not they can take the next step in September remains to be seen, but right now, they’re one of the top teams in the NRL. Their pack is surging up the field and the spine is manufacturing points behind it. That should continue this week even without Mahoney. While the Tigers have displayed some promising signs in recent weeks, they’ve done so against bad teams. While definitely improving, I’m expecting a slight reality check for the Tigers this week. Their attack is finally starting to create points through repeatable actions. However, they’re going to be put under a lot more pressure on Sunday than they’ve been used to over the last six weeks. With an opportunity to cement themselves in the top four throughout the Origin period, Parramatta will be out to secure these two points early.
