Manly Sea Eagles vs Cronulla Sharks Preview

Crunch time for Manly Sea Eagles at home as they seek to avoid a third straight loss.

But their task shapes as a difficult one against the heavyweight Cronulla Sharks, who will be fired up to respond to a heavy Magic Round defeat.

Manly fell out of the Top 8 for the first time this season after meek defeats to the Titans at home (26-10) and the Broncos in Magic Round (32-6).

Jake Trbojevic’s loss is being keenly felt, brother Tom is still firing well below capacity and the side is lacking a playmaking option besides Daly Cherry-Evans.

Out-of-sorts and out of shape Josh Schuster has been named in the reserves but a late-call-up appears unlikely. The Sea Eagles’ named 17 is unchanged.

The Sharks arrived in Brisbane second on the ladder and on a three-game march, having destroyed the Cowboys 44-6 in Round 9.

But they were caught on their heels by an effervescent Dolphins outfit in a 36-16 defeat.

Cronulla was already 30-0 down before getting on the scoreboard, the game as good as over.

The Sharks won the yardage battle and made more line-breaks, but uncustomary errors and sloppy defence plagued their performance.

After dominating the rivalry with 18 wins in the archrivals’ last 21 clashes, the Sharks chalked up convincing wins at home (34-22) – with Siosifa Talakai producing an astonishing first-half display – and at Manly (40-6) in 2022.

If there’s anything close to a certainty in Round 11, it’s Cronulla bouncing back hard.

The Sharks are yet to lose consecutive regular-season games under Craig Fitzgibbon, while Seibold’s Sea Eagles are more than a couple of tweaks away from competing with the NRL’s big dogs.
