On the surface this is an out-and-out cellar-dweller battle as the 14th-placed 4-13 Canterbury Bulldogs host the 15th-placed, 3-14 Gold Coast Titans. But the teams’ recent formlines are miles apart.
Since their stunning routs of the Eels and Tigers, the Bulldogs have held their own in hard-fought losses to the Sharks (18-6) and Rabbitohs (36-28). They were particularly impressive against Souths, taking it down to the wire.
The Titans are on a seven-match losing streak and have won just one of their last 13. Last week they faded 16-12 to an Origin-ravaged Broncos side.
A striking feature of the Titans’ slide this season has been their offensive drop-off, averaging just 15.2 points per game compared to 24.2 in 2021. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have scored 24 points on average in seven games under Mick Potter after managing a measly 9.6 in the first 10 rounds with Trent Barret in charge.
Bulldogs tyro Aaron Schoupp (COVID) is hopeful of a return and Josh Addo-Carr (ankle) has been named. Titans livewire Jayden Campbell is listed on the bench for his first game since Round 13.
The Titans have won their last three against the Bulldogs, including both games in 2021 by double-digit margins. But Gold Coast are a shadow of the effervescent outfit that surged to a drought-breaking finals appearance last year. The Bulldogs are playing with too much desire and enterprise to get rolled here and should cover easily.
