Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders Preview

Fourth-placed Brisbane is chasing seven straight wins for the first time since 2015 – but it won’t be simple against a revitalised Canberra on Saturday night.

The 8-4 Broncos managed to keep their streak (in which they’ve averaged 32 points and conceded just 11.5 per games) going despite the absence of Adam Reynolds in their last two against the battling Knights and Titans.

Reynolds returns this week, while Origin stars Payne Haas, Kotoni Staggs, Selwyn Cobbo and Pat Carrigan have been named but Kurt Capewell will be rested.

The Raiders have recovered from a 2-6 start to win four of their last five – including high-quality upsets of the Sharks, Rabbitohs and Roosters. They showed plenty of resolve to hold off the Roosters 22-16 without marquee duo Josh Papalii and Jack Wighton after letting a 12-point lead slip.

Xavier Savage and Matt Timoko are in hot form out wide, while Joe Tapine and Corey Horsburgh have been superb up front. Wighton and Papalii have been named, while James Schiller comes onto the wing for the suspended Jordan Rapana.

After losing the last six clashes between the clubs, the Raiders have won their last three against the Broncos. Last season’s sole encounter saw the Green Machine romp to a 38-16 victory at home – but the Broncos have won the last five in Brisbane.

The Origin pinch plays into the visitors’ hands this week, however, and the Raiders look a sharp option against the spread in what should be a cracking contest.
