Meanwhile, the South East Melbourne Phoenix are guaranteed to finish their debut campaign as an also-ran.
The 9-15 Phoenix have faded big time with six losses in their last seven games – including the last four straight. But there were signs of improvement in Round 17 with a 108-101 road loss to the Bullets and a 103-102 defeat at home to the Taipans. Mitch Creek (32 pts, 10 reb) shone for the fast-finishing Phoenix in the latter encounter.
The Phoenix won the teams’ maiden clash 101-91 at Melbourne Arena in October. But the Sixers hit back with victories over the new boys on the road (103-91) and at home (113-111) within the next seven weeks.
SE Melbourne are a dismal 3-9 on the road, with their only win in their last eight away games coming against the battling Hawks. The 36ers have a 7-5 home record – winning three of their last four in Adelaide – but the well-rested Phoenix look the better ATS value.
