The Kansas City Chiefs are well-backed favourites to win NFL Super Bowl LV but Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have home field advantage. Their regular season record bodes well for them, too.
Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are preparing to play the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV.
Not only have the Buccaneers navigated their way through a tough season with a 43-year-old quarterback (albeit, the GOAT), they’ve rattled off three consecutive wins on the road and will play the decider at home in Tampa Bay.
However, Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs have opened as $1.58 and -3 favourites following their convincing win over the Buffalo Bills. They’ve done it easy all season, really. While some games have been closer than antipated, their 38-24 win in the conference championship is a fair enough reflection of their dominance.
Early Super Bowl Betting
Brady proved in the first half against the Green Bay Packers that he still has one of those quarters in him. You know, the sort that win Super Bowl’s (sorry Falcons fans, but you know exactly the sort of quarter he’s capable of). This will be Brady’s 10th Super Bowl, too. His experience only adds to the likelihood of a match-winning performance.
Still, punters have looked towards Mahomes early. They’re putting their faith in the 25-year-old who threw 3 touchdowns and 325 yards against the Bills.
A whopping 71% of the money has come in on the Chiefs head-to-head ($1.58) while 63% is dedicated to their -3 line.
Given the excitement over the Chiefs, it’s no surprise to see Mahomes well-backed in the Super Bowl MVP market. He’s best-backed early to add another MVP trophy to the one he picked up last year.
Super Bowl Betting Trends
- Favourties have been the flavour of the Super Bowl in recent years. They’ve covered the last two – including the Chiefs last year – and three of the last four to be 27-25-2 overall. As expected, favourites tend to win straight up to be 36-18 overall. It’s worth noting, however, that this recent run for the favourites follows a dominant period for underdogs. Eight of the nine prior deciders went the way of the underdogs.
- It’s a dead heat as far as the points total goes. The last 20 Super Bowls have seen 10 games finish over the total and 10 finish under. Historically, the 26-26-1 record (no total in Super Bowl I) doesn’t provide any hints as to which way this one might go.
- Brady walks into his 10th Super Bowl but just his second as an underdog. He’s 4-5 against the spread.
- Travis Kelce is the favourite to score the first touchdown at $7.50. TE’s have scored the first just five times: WR’s – 22, RB’s – 21, QB’s – 3.
- Regular season records don’t typically mean much. However, the Buccaneers playing at home offers some relevance here. Especially when considering that 12 of the last 15 Super Bowls have been won by the team with the worse regular season record.
