But the Demons bring superior momentum into this pivotal encounter, climbing up to eighth with their best win of 2020 (and their third on the trot) – a 16.4 (100) to 6.8 (44) dismantling of Collingwood.
Despite the absence of captain Max Gawn, the Dees blew the desperate Magpies away with a seven-goal second quarter. Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca were again brilliant in the midfield, while small forward Charlie Spargo bagged three goals.
The Bulldogs arrested a three-game slide with a 16.15 (111) to 8.6 (54) defeat of languishing Adelaide on Sunday. Aaron Naughton kicked a career-best six goals, while Marcus Bontempelli had 33 disposals and two goals, Lachie Hunter notched a goal to go with 29 disposals and Bailey Smith racked up 37 disposals. Ruckman Tim English is in doubt this week in what could be a significant setback.
The Bulldogs have won 12 of their last 17 against Melbourne. They halted a three-game losing run in the rivalry with an eight-point victory in round 17 last year – Josh Dunkley (2 goals, 37 disposals) enjoyed a big afternoon.
Impressive as they were in murdering the Crows, the Bulldogs are 0–5 this season against the current top-eight teams. The Demons are channelling the spirit of their breakout 2018 campaign and look tremendous value as only narrow favourites.
