How will the Demons respond? That’s the question on everyone’s mind after Simon Goodwin’s side saw its 17-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Fremantle last week.
The Dockers cashed in on key defender Steven May’s absence to runaway with the game in the third quarter, a performance that taught the rest of the league one thing: the reigning premiers can be beaten.
A loss like that can do strange things for a club though, and it’s fair to say there will be a sense of relief in the Dees’ locker room with the pressure of the winning streak finally over.
Simon Goodwin will draw plenty of positives away from last week’s loss, but it’s doubtful he’ll spend too much time dwelling on it with another tough game against the Swans ahead on Saturday.
Sydney has been a tough team to get a feel for this season, especially on the back of a controversial win over Richmond last week.
To make matters more complicated, star forward Buddy Franklin is likely out after striking Trent Cotchin last week with an elbow.
On the flip side, however, May is also likely to miss this game after suffering a concussion, leaving the Dees potentially vulnerable against a Sydney forward line that still packs plenty of punch behind Issac Heeney and Sam Reid.
It’s dangerous to read too much into last week’s loss to Fremantle, but the Swans have typically played the Dees well in recent times, covering in seven of their last eight games against Melbourne, alongside a 3-0 record as the away underdog.
Backing against an experienced premiership side at home is tough, but if the Swans can put some pressure on the Dees inside 50, they’re a much better chance than the current line suggests.
