It’s been a big week off the field for the Demons, but the focus has to remain on the field this week with a tough matchup against a feisty Hawks outfit.
Melbourne’s top four spot is guaranteed if they take care of business, but with the Blues only six points adrift, there’s still time for things to get interesting.
Hawthorn has put together a pair of magical wins over Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs, encouraging signs of things to come for a club that most had penciled in for the wooden spoon.
Unfortunately, the injury bug has struck the brown and gold with Chad Wingard rupturing his achilles, while key forward Mitch Lewis is also in doubt with a foot problem.
The absence of both will be felt up forward, but the Hawks do strike the Dees at an opportune time with Bayley Fritsch still a week away from returning.
Historically, Melbourne has enjoyed the better part of this fixture winning six of their last seven encounters with Hawthorn, but as we’ve seen in recent weeks, the Hawks are capable of pushing even the best teams.
Whether they can accomplish that three weeks in a row is the question, but with confidence high and Melbourne struggling to put together two halves of footy in recent weeks, this could be another interesting afternoon.
