The Pies took the world by storm last week with a stirring win over Carlton, and they’ll now set their sights on a familiar rival on Sunday in front of another large crowd at the ‘G.
A month ago Collingwood looked headed for a rough second half of the season with back to back losses to Richmond and the Dogs, only to produce two impressive wins on the trot over Freo and the Blues – two serious finals contenders.
The feisty Hawks present the next challenge for Craig McRae to conquer, a team that has largely held Collingwood’s number with four wins from their last five meetings.
Hawthorn comes into this game on the back of a disappointing loss to the Suns in Darwin last week, their fourth loss from their last five games.
Sam Mitchell’s men have proven themselves a tough out on more than one occasion this season, but it was painfully clear last week that Hawthorn’s depleted ruck is perhaps too big of a problem to overcome.
The Hawks have played to an outstanding 4-0 record as the home underdog against Collingwood, but if the Pies can control the midfield battle and, more importantly, win the marking battle inside 50, they should be punching their ticket to the top eight.
