The match of the round this weekend comes from Sydney when GWS hosts Collingwood. Unlike the Tigers who have come out of their bye three weeks ago firing on all cylinders, the Giants have fallen flat. The AFL’s youngest club has lost three on the bounce and is in desperate need of a win to stay in touch with the top four. A 27-point loss to Richmond at the MCG last weekend drops the Giants to just 3-16 at the ‘G all time.
The Pies produced a rousing comeback against the Eagles when they looked down and out, prevailing by a point against one of the premiership favourites, holding the reigning champs goalless for the final quarter and a half.
In their last meeting in the 2018 finals, the Pies won by 10 points, with the damage done in the opening quarter as they kicked 3.6 to 0.2. Collingwood had 10 more scoring shots than the Giants on that night and should have won by more. GWS is 1-3 against the Pies at Giants Stadium, with that one win by just 3 points in 2017. They are 9-7 against the spread this season, but 4-1 at home, although they lost their last home game against the Lions in round 16. It’s a rare back to back road sequence for the Pies, who are just 6-10 on the line, but 2-1 interstate in 2019. The Wolf knows the Pies will have plenty of support in Sydney, but it’s time for the Giants to make a statement and Collingwood might suffer a let down after being their bogey side on the road last round.
