The Bombers have made a habit of winning close games and last round was no different as they squeezed past the Suns by 10 points at Metricon Stadium. That win, the Dons’ eighth in 10 games has them staring at a finals berth, two games clear of eighth placed Adelaide.
They go in as deserved favourites for their Saturday afternoon match at Marvel Stadium against Port Adelaide, who have fallen off the pace and sit in 10th spot. Port has lost three in a row since its 57-point hammering of Adelaide in the Showdown, falling by a point to the Giants in Adelaide last round.
Essendon has won its last two against Port at Marvel and last three overall, including their final round meeting of the 2018 home and away season, where they prevailed by 22 points in Adelaide. In just one game this season at Marvel Stadium, the Power were hammered by 39 points and failed to cover the line. Overall, they have been one to avoid in handicap betting, covering just six times in 18 games.
The Dons are 5-1 straight up at Marvel and 4-2 against the spread, but four of their six games have gone under the total points at their home ground. Margin betting is one to keep an eye on, with Essendon winning by 40+ in just three of their 11 wins. The Wolf can’t back an out of sorts Port side, with coach Ken Hinkley under all sorts of pressure. Essendon’s run of good fortune is bound to end sooner or later, but it won’t be this week at home against Port.
