The Wests Tigers 36-22 loss to the Eels is a fair reflection of their performance last week. Parramatta flew out of the blocks with a couple of errors at the back, giving Wests a chance to come back. Without Clint Gutherson and Blake Ferguson spilling the ball, Wests are never in it. Speaking of never in it, the North Queensland Cowboys have barely been in anything this season. Once again, their defence cost them any chance of victory down by 30 points at halftime last week.

Accepting himself that the Tigers attack wasn’t up to scratch, Michael Maguire has made a couple of changes out the back. Moses Mbye comes into the centres pushing Tommy Talau out to the wing. Asu Kepaoa loses his spot in the side. The Cowboys have been given a massive boost with Jason Taumalolo named at lock while Kyle Feldt returns to the wing.

If the Cowboys are to start displaying some starch in defence before giving what is a dangerous looking backline a platform to build on, it has to start this week. The Tigers scored one good try last week; their attack didn’t play as well as 22 points suggests. Taumalolo will breathe life into North Queensland. Even if the rest of the pack don’t take his return as a reason to step up, the Tongan international will add roughly 200 metres to the Cowboys yardage game regardless. That gives Scott Drinkwater, Valentine Holmes and Reece Robson something to work with. Not convinced with the Tigers over the last fortnight, a rare upset isn’t out of the question here despite the Cowboys’ 21-year drought at Leichhardt Oval.
