Penrith Panthers vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview

The 11-1 Penrith Panthers march on in relentless fashion, subduing top-four contenders Melbourne (32-6), Sydney Roosters (32-12) and North Queensland (22-0) in the past three rounds.

But the representative period caused them some issue in 2021 – the Panthers lost to also-rans the Tigers and Sharks back-to-back after winning their first 12 games – and have donated a big contingent to NSW’s cause again. Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai, Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo, Liam Martin and Stephen Crichton are all in Blues camp.

That brings Sean O’Sullivan and debutant Kurt Kalls into the halves, Robert Jennings and Charlie Staines into the backline and Chris Smith and Matt Eisenhuth into the engine-room.

It’s a gift-wrapped opportunity for a morale-boosting win for last-placed Canterbury. Since Trent Barrett’s exit, the 2-10 Bulldogs have posted their two highest scores of the season under Mick Potter but have leaked plenty in losses to the Tigers (36-22) and Dragons (34-24).

The Bulldogs are unrepresented in Origin – and overlooked star recruits Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton will have a big point to prove to Brad Fittler.

Penrith’s 32-12 win over Canterbury at CommBank Stadium in Round 5 – with Dylan Edwards scooping the three Dally M points – was its eighth in the last 10 between the clubs. The Panthers’ current four-match winning streak against the Bulldogs features an average margin of 29.5 points.

While there’s millions of dollars of blue-chip talent missing from the Penrith line-up, the defensive systems remain in place and the fill-ins are very capable. Expect a more conservative approach with the ball in hand from the hosts, but it’s doubtful the Bulldogs can find enough points to trouble the under-strength premiers.
