Gold Coast Titans vs North Queensland Cowboys Preview

Victims of their own success to an extent, North Queensland Cowboys must overcome the Origin drain to maintain their top-four standing. Maroons Jeremiah Nanai, Reuben Cotter, Tom Dearden and Valentine Holmes will be missing on Thursday, but wider squad members Murray Taulagi and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow are available.

Jason Taumalolo is a big in, however, while experienced backs Brendan Elliott and Ben Hampton will come in and do a job at wing and five-eighth, respectively.

The Cowboys are coming off a 22-0 loss at Penrith. Comprehensive as it was, the surprise-packets showed plenty of spirit defensively under a welter of Panthers possession and conceded just one second-half try.

The 3-9 Gold Coast Titans, meanwhile, are picking themselves off the canvas after blowing a 20-point halftime lead against a depleted Brisbane. They were outscored 31-0 in the second-half of a 35-24 loss as their defensive frailties were again exposed.

The Titans will be without captain and Maroons enforcer Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and injured wrecking ball David Fifita. But deposed Origin prop Moeaki Fotuaika returns from an ankle injury, as does gritty centre Patrick Herbert. Jayden Campbell’s return at fullback has been a massive plus despite the Titans’ ongoing inconsistency.

The Cowboys have won 11 of their last 14 against the Titans, snapping a three-match losing run in the Queensland rivalry with a handsome 30-4 home victory in Round 7. Scott Drinkwater was brilliant from fullback, while the Cowboys’ pack scored an overwhelming points win over their counterparts.

Despite their absentees, expect the Cowboys – led by Chad Townsend, Drinkwater and Taumalolo – to get the result here as the club’s depth comes to the fore.
