Manly Sea Eagles vs New Zealand Warriors Preview

The only Origin absentee from this clash is a big one: Manly and Queensland No.7 Daly Cherry-Evans, who has toyed with the Warriors like arguably no other player in their history.

It’s a vital game for the 5-7 Sea Eagles, who have lost three on the trot – including a 28-8 defeat in Melbourne last week – as well as losing superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic. But Des Hasler has the luxury of moving Josh Schuster into the halves to partner Kieran Foran, while Martin Taupau, Jason Saab and Karl Lawton return.

The Warriors are a mess. Winning just one of their last seven, they have coughed up second-half leads in the past fortnight in losses to the Dragons (24-18) and Knights (24-16) as well as navigating bizarre off-field tumult.

They have the worst defence in the comp, their front-row stocks have been decimated and veteran linchpin Shaun Johnson does not look a happy camper, despite still being responsible for most of their points.

Wayde Egan, Bayley Sironen and Rocco Berry return for Freddy Lussick, Eliesa Katoa and the injured Viliami Vailea in a deckchair-shuffling Team List Tuesday for the embattled nomads. Tohu Harris was massive against the Knights but Addin Fonua-Blake’s injury absence is being keenly felt.

After losing four of the previous five encounters between the clubs, the Sea Eagles won both games against the Warriors in 2021 – an ugly 13-12 result at Brookvale in Gosford via a last-gasp DCE field goal and a Tom Trbojevic-led 38-32 comeback win at Brookvale in Round 9.

Look for Manly to roll through the Warriors’ depleted middle, while Foran and Schuster will be licking their lips at the prospect of picking apart the visitors’ shambolic edge defence.
