Newcastle has relieved some pressure with scratchy wins over fellow battlers Canterbury and the Warriors either side of a 24-point loss to Brisbane in its past three outings. They’ll have Kalyn Ponga and Dane Gagai backing up from Origin, while Kurt Mann returns on the bench, and Jacob Saifiti will start in the place of injured twin Daniel.

A severely Origin-depleted Penrith comfortably accounted for Canterbury 30-18 last Friday to improve to 12-1. Stand-in skippers Dylan Edwards and James Fisher-Harris led by example as the Panthers’ depth came to the fore.

The Panthers’ NSW contingent of Nathan Cleary, Liam Martin, Isaah Yeo, Stephen Crichton, Brian To’o and Jarome Luai have all been named to play, but it would not surprise to see at least a couple rested given the calibre of the opposition.

Then-unbeaten Newcastle showed some spirit in a 38-20 loss to Penrith in Bathurst in Round 3 after having Mitchell Barnett sent off in the first half – but their season has spiralled from that point. The Knights have won only one of their last 11 against the Panthers, who have won four straight at Newcastle.

Newcastle’s last six games against Top 8 opposition have resulted in losses by 18-plus margins. Only one of Penrith’s 12 wins was by less than 12 points, including eight by a margin of 20 or more. Unless the Panthers’ Blues are ruled out en masse, this shapes as an easy cover for the minor premiers-in-waiting.
