New Zealand Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks Preview
The lamentable 37-game Nathan Brown era at the Warriors – which garnered a paltry 12 wins – has come to a close. The club will be hoping the historic avalanche of points the team has conceded under his tutelage also ends with his departure.
The Warriors have won just one of their last nine and hit yet another new low with a 44-12 defeat at Manly last Saturday. The NRL’s worst defensive outfit were steamrolled through the middle, showed little goal-line resolve and were out of ideas on attack – with Shaun Johnson once again under fire.
Club legend Stacey Jones – who boasts a good lower-grade record but has been party to recent failures as Brown’s assistant – takes the reins. Jones resisted shaking things up on Team List Tuesday, with Josh Curran’s long-awaited return and Dunamis Lui coming in for Aaron Pene the only changes, though he hinted at a late reshuffle.
Early bolter Cronulla is at an interesting crossroads after getting stuck in a win-loss pattern since Round 5. The 7-5 Sharks’ last three games have been very underwhelming, bookending a so-so win over the Titans with 20-point defeats to the Raiders and Roosters.
The Warriors have won just two of their last 11 against the Sharks – and the memory of crashing 29-10 in the Shire in Round 9 after the hosts had Will Kennedy sent off early and Jesse Ramien sin-binned will be fresh in the mind.
Ramien returns from the suspension incurred after that clash, which should have alarm bells ringing in a shaky Warriors backline.
But the Warriors have been much better at their Redcliffe base in 2022, going 3-0 before an eight-point loss to the Knights in Round 12. The Sharks are just 2-4 on the road. It may be ambitious to say an upset is in the offing, but the Warriors seem likely to lift for Jones in an emotion-charged week and are getting a huge start.
