Canterbury Bulldogs vs Parramatta Eels Preview

Round 14 closes with a showdown between last-placed Canterbury and Top 4 hopeful Parramatta.

The 2-11 Bulldogs’ attack has improved since Trent Barrett’s exit – scoring 18-plus points in three losses after scoring no more than 16 in their first 10 games – but they have leaked 100 points to the Tigers, Dragons and Panthers.

Despite the brilliance of Josh Addo-Carr and Matt Burton, the blue-and-whites could not capitalise on the Panthers’ Origin drain, going down 30-18.

The 8-4 Eels are starting to couple their giant-killing exploits (away wins over the Storm and Panthers) with a bit of consistency (hard-fought victories over the Sea Eagles and Raiders in their last two). Halves Dylan Brown and Mitch Moses are absolutely humming in a well-oiled Parramatta line-up.

Blockbusting winger Maika Sivo makes his first appearance for the Eels since late-2021, with Waqa Blake shifting to centre in the closest thing the club has had to a full-strength backline this season. Blues trio Ryan Matterson, Junior Paulo and Reagan Campbell-Gillard have been named to play.

Jake Averillo has been named at fullback for the Bulldogs with Corey Allan on the wing in another selection head-scratcher – the same late reshuffle last week didn’t work. Luke Thompson withdrew late from the Panthers game and is still out, while Tevita Pangai Jr is among the reserves.

Parramatta has won 10 of its last 12 against Canterbury – including the last four grudge matches in a row. The two 2021 encounters followed a similar script: the Eels prevailed 32-10 in Round 8 and 36-10 in Round 15, with former Bulldog Shaun Lane a try-scorer in both matches.

The Bulldogs are playing with a bit more freedom under Mick Potter but have little to offer outside Burton and ‘The Fox’, while a frequently-changing line-up is set to bear the brunt of the Eels’ mouth-watering array of attacking firepower.
