Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders Preview

A contest of contrasts on Saturday night. The unbeaten Brisbane Broncos are riding high atop the NRL ladder, hunting their first 6-0 start since 1997. Canberra Raiders have won just one of their five games and are coming off a second-half capitulation at home to Penrith, losing 53-12.

The Raiders were in a similar spot last year, losing six of their first eight before recovering to make the finals. But there doesn’t seem to be the same capability to turn things around in 2023. The star-studded pack seems stale. There’s holes at fullback and hooker.

Jack Wighton is suspended but was being relied on too much to spark the team as it was. Brad Schneider will come into the halves with Matt Frawley injured, while favourite son Jarrod Croker returns for the first time since last May with centre Harley Smith-Shields dropped.

The Broncos are passing every test with flying colours, putting the Dragons (40-18) and Tigers (46-12) to the sword either side of a ferocious challenge from the Dolphins (18-12) in recent weeks.

Reece Walsh and Payne Haas are close to the competition’s form players in their positions, Adam Reynolds is the calm conductor and there’s strike dripping from every corner of the team sheet.

The Broncos have won nine of their last 14 against the Raiders, snapping a three-match losing run with a 24-18 victory in their only encounter in 2022. The Raiders have lost their last six to the Broncos in Brisbane.

This would be a good time for the Raiders to show some backbone. But with their spine in shambles there’s very little chance of them going anywhere near an upset against the NRL’s standout team. If they’re prepared to lay a solid platform, the Broncos could be in for another points bonanza.
