Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles Preview

After grinding their way through their opening three matches against high-profile opposition who lifted big time, Penrith Panthers exploded in the capital last Friday to put 40 second-half points on the struggling Raiders in a 53-12 win.

The two-time champs boast the best defensive record in the NRL but their attack had struggled to click. That all changed in Round 5 with Nathan Cleary, Izack Tago, Brian To’o and Sunia Turuva on fire.

That’s a worrying sign for Manly this Saturday after leaking six tries in a somewhat fortunate 32-all draw with a ragtag Newcastle outfit. The Sea Eagles led 10-0 early but had to fight back from 12 points down, then were only a conversion attempt away from being pipped at the end of regulation.

Tom Trbojevic’s heavily involved display was a positive, while Josh Schuster returns this week after being a late withdrawal from the Mudgee match.

Jason Saab comes in on the wing for the injured Christian Tuipulotu and is sure to be targeted by the Panthers. Karl Lawton comes onto the bench for Ben Trbojevic (hamstring).

Penrith enforcer James Fisher-Harris is out, with Matt Eisenhuth replacing him. Soni Luke returns on the bench. Liam Martin and Luke Garner remain out, but Zac Hosking is flourishing in the second-row.

Penrith has won its last six against Manly, with the last four coming by margins of at least 12 points. The clubs last met in Round 1 last year, with the Panthers carving out a 28-6 home win.

The Panthers have won an eye-watering 31 of their last 35 matches at home.

The jury is still out on the Sea Eagles under Anthony Seibold against top-shelf teams after conceding 30-plus in two of their last three, with the hosts highly unlikely to give them as much defensive leeway as they’ve enjoyed so far this season.
