The Western Bulldogs pulled off a huge upset in downing competition favourites Geelong last Saturday night, but can they back it up this weekend against one of the competition’s lesser lights? The Dogs have had a habit of playing down to their opposition this season, with defeats to Carlton and the Gold Coast among their losses. They won’t want to be complacent on Sunday against the Dees, who are coming off a spirited win of their own.
Melbourne has been a shocking fourth quarter team in 2019 and almost dropped their bundle against Carlton, with Jayden Hunt’s 30th minute final term goal meaning they avoided what would have been an embarrassing loss from five goals up at three-quarter time.
These teams last met in round 17 a season ago at the MCG, with Melbourne 50-point winners. Plenty has changed for both sides since, but on that occasion, the Dogs were down just three points at half time, with Melbourne kicking eight goals to three in the third quarter to bust the game open.
Melbourne and Marvel Stadium have not always seen eye to eye, with a 6-21 record since 2009. This is their first game at the ground this season. They are just 5-10 against the spread, with the hot and cold Dogs slightly better at 8-7. If they are any hope of playing finals, this is a game the Dogs must win. The Wolf isn’t completely sold on the sons of the west, but they are up against Melbourne, one of the league’s most disappointing sides, so it’s a great chance for the Dogs to show up and keep their distant finals hopes alive.
