Richmond Tigers vs Melbourne Demons Preview

Winners of three straight, the Tigers and Dees both step out at the ‘G on Sunday with different goals in mind.

Richmond’s recent form hasn’t been enough to see them inside the eight, the yellow and black still sitting 10th on the ladder – even after rising from the ashes last week to defeat Hawthorn by a single point.

Ultimately, Melbourne would have to do a lot wrong to slide out of the top four, but with just as many points separating the Dees from third on the ladder, a home final is still very much up for grabs.

The Demons prevailed by 18 points when they faced the Tigers back in Round 6, a game that saw Richmond held to just one goal in the final term, whilst Jacob van Rooyen set the MCG alight with three.

Plenty has changed since then, particularly up forward at Melbourne with Christian Petracca providing a real spark on the score sheet over the last few rounds.

In terms of goals, neither side has found scoring easy this year, as we saw last week with Jack Riewoldt completely shut down by James Sicily.

Down the other end, the Dees do look the more complete side down back, but after giving up 100+ points to the Lions, and 93 to the Crows last week, there are danger signs for Steven May and company.

The Tigers had some low-scoring, ugly games during the midway point in the year, but Shai Bolton, Dustin Martin, and Tim Taranto have all been in great nick over the last month – not to mention some handy efforts from Jack Graham and other role players.

Melbourne looks as though they might be coming good just at the right time, but on the back of two questionable defensive performances, the Tigers might put up a decent number on the scoreboard.
