Hawthorn Hawks vs St Kilda Saints Preview

A win is a win, but after just scraping home against lowly North Melbourne last week, the sixth-placed Saints suddenly look the most vulnerable of the eight teams still contesting a finals spot.

St Kilda ran out less-than-convincing eight-point winners, storming home late thanks to some more Jack Sinclair brilliance, and a well-timed goal from Jack Higgins.

Four points is all a coach can ask for, but Ross Lyon will be the first to admit his low-scoring side needs to find some form in a hurry.

Up next, another game against one of the competition’s cellar dwellers, but if you’ve paid attention to the Hawks at all this year, you’ll know this is far from a ‘gimme’.

Sam Mitchell’s young squad was the better team for almost four quarters last week against Richmond, folding late in the final term to lose by a single point.

A win like that would have done wonders for a rebuilding team, but there were still enormous positives to draw with James Sicily putting on a clinic against Jack Riewoldt, and Mitch Lewis enjoying another four-goal haul.

In terms of confidence, neither side inspires much belief from a betting standpoint, and as far as stats are concerned, there really isn’t much separating the pair.

The Hawks and Saints are both averaging 20 scoring shots a game and close to 11 goals, while the two are almost even in clearances and inside 50s.

The one area that could really decide this game though, is turnover.

Hawthorn plays an aggressive brand of footy that has seen them undone against elite defensive teams, but when they get some run through the middle and force the opposition to turn the ball over, they can be lethal on the rebound.

Ross Lyon’s defensive brain could make this matchup very interesting, but with the Hawks prevailing by 10 points when these two sides met earlier in May, you have to fancy the brown and gold a chance on the back of last week’s efforts.
