Geelong Cats vs Collingwood Magpies Preview

The clash between the Cats and the Magpies at the Gabba this Saturday night is set to be an absolute ripper.

Geelong goes into this game coming off a loss to Port Adelaide last weekend, with their inaccuracy (mostly Coleman Medallist Tom Hawkins) being a major issue.

Pundits and media have also started to question the Cats recent finals record, despite dominating in the home and away season – Geelong has struggled to get the job done when it matters most, losing yet another qualifying final.

Cats coach Chris Scott has labelled it as a lazy stat, however, the evidence is starting to pile up that Geelong may have an issue come the business end of the season.

Collingwood, on the other hand, is coming off one of the all-time great finals wins (we backed them at the line if you don’t mind) – a one-point triumph over the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium.

This was truly a win for the ages when you factor in the quarantine arrangements, being labelled the “dirty pies” and the hostile Perth crowd.

The Magpies were brilliant – Brodie Mihocek, Mason Cox and Jordan De Goey played brilliantly up forward, they kept West Coast at bay for the entire match and held off their fast charging comeback in the last quarter.

No matter what happens from here, Collingwood’s win over West Coast in the Elimination Final will truly be something to savour.

Can the Magpies back it up against the Cats on Saturday night?

Absolutely.

Both teams have three wins from their last six matches against each other, however, Collingwood have won their past three over the Cats including a 22 point win in Perth back in Round 7 and they got the job done in last year’s Qualifying Final.

When it comes to selection, there is a cloud over Geelong skipper Joel Selwood’s fitness and his dislocated finger along with Jack Steven’s hamstring injury.

Collingwood has a clean bill of health right now with the exception of Jeremy Howe and Tom Phillips.

Cats fans will hope that Tom Hawkins will fix his kicking woes and this game could quite possibly be Gary Ablett Jnr’s last (result dependent)

Picking a winner in this game is a bloody hard task, and one would think we could be in for a finals nail biter.

With the game likely to be close, I’ve taken either team to win by 15.5 or less in this one at the good value price of $2.15 at time of publish.
