Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier Preview

Dustin Poirier shocked the world when dispatching Conor McGregor inside just two rounds at UFC 257 in a rematch from nearly seven years ago. They will now run it back once again in a rubber match who will likely determine who gets the next shot at UFC Lightweight Champion, Charles Oliveira.

Poirier’s game plan for the second fight was nothing short of genius. He brilliantly exploited McGregor’s stance, in which he places a lot of weight on his front foot, allowing him to throw that left hand with a ridiculous amount of power. Poirier demolished Conor’s front leg with calf kicks, nullifying his offence in the first round and forcing McGregor to throw reckless strikes with no footwork or movement. This caused McGregor to tire out quickly and as soon as Poirier recognised this, he moved in for the kill and knocked him out only seconds later.

There will be two key differences coming into this fight for McGregor. The last fight was only his third in 27 months but he now comes into this fight off a seven-month layoff, so any ring rust should be well and truly gone. Second and most important, McGregor’s team will have recognised their issues from the last fight and will no doubt have put measures in place to ensure the result isn’t the same.

It’s hard to know what Poirier will do this time in, knowing full well he won’t get away with the same strategy as last time. There is a chance that he may choose to take it to the ground and exploit Conor’s lack of submission defence as previously shown against Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

While we always have to be wary of Conor’s brutal knockout power, The Wolf thinks Poirier’s cardio may be the deciding factor here. We have seen McGregor tire badly in the past and if Poirier can weather the inevitable early storm, he’ll be able to turn up the heat in Round 3 and ‘punch’ his ticket to another championship opportunity late in the fight.
