A crunch Top 8 showdown for both teams to close out Super Saturday.

All seven of South Sydney’s wins in 2022 came against teams currently sitting eighth or lower on the ladder. The Rabbitohs were humiliated 32-12 by the Dragons in Round 15, trailing 32-0 in a diabolical first half that saw rookie coach Jason Demitriou inexplicably hook rookie halfback Lachlan Ilias.

But Souths have been boosted by fullback Latrell Mitchell’s return for his first game since Round 5. Kodi Nikorima drops to the bench and Blake Taafe is bumped to the reserves.

Parramatta continues to confound, recovering from a horrific 34-4 loss to Canterbury with a blistering first-half performance to subdue Sydney Roosters 26-16 five days later. Dylan Brown and Mitchell Moses were at their sparkling best, Clint Gutherson enjoyed one of his best games of 2022 and Maika Sivo added a new, familiar dimension on the flank.

The Eels’ 17 – which includes four Test reps and Origin prop Junior Paulo – is unchanged from Round 15.

Souths have won six of their last seven against Parramatta – including a pair of big wins in 2021. Alex Johnston snared a hat-trick in a 38-20 result in Round 12, while Josh Mansour and Jaxson Paulo bagged doubles in a 40-12 drubbing in Round 21.

The Eels are unsurprisingly favourites against a Rabbitohs team that has overwhelmingly struggled against anything resembling quality opposition. But it’s difficult to predict which iteration of the blue-and-golds will run out on Saturday night, or whether they can produce anywhere near an 80-minute performance.

Both teams can score and leak plenty of points – and Souths’ last nine games have gone over.
