North Queensland Cowboys vs Brisbane Broncos Preview

A strong favourite for match of the round honours with archrivals North Queensland and Brisbane sailing towards a finals return. Both clubs have made immense progress since the Cowboys’ emphatic 38-12 derby win at Suncorp Stadium in Round 3.

The 11-4 Cowboys produced one of the great escapes in Round 15, recovering from the pre-kick-off withdrawal of Origin star Reuben Cotter and a 14-point deficit with less than 10 minutes to go against Manly. With Valentine Holmes exploding, the Cowboys scored three tries in five minutes to pull off a 28-26 miracle.

It was another step in the evolution of Todd Payten’s side, whose surge to third on the ladder had been built on establishing big early leads.

Adam Reynolds has transformed the 9-5 Broncos, but their ability to win without the veteran halfback recruit was a key feature of the seven-match winning streak that ended with a spirited 32-20 loss in Melbourne in Round 15.

Reynolds returns this week to partner rookie sensation Ezra Mam in the halves again, while Payne Haas, Kurt Capewell and Patrick Carrigan have been named after putting in a big Origin shift – as has Tonga’s Kotoni

Staggs. Maroons trio Holmes, Murray Taulagi and Jeremiah Nanai are in and Tom Gilbert returns but Cotter remains sidelined.

The Cowboys have won three of the last four derbies overall and nine of the last 14 in Townsville. They boast the second-beset defence in the NRL and have scored 28-plus points in eight of their last nine games. But the Broncos’ attack has been among the competition’s most potent over the past couple of months.

Strap in for another all-Queensland epic, with the Cowboys set to narrowly get up at home.
