North Queensland Cowboys vs St. George Illawarra Dragons Preview

North Queensland consolidated its top-four standing in Round 13 with a dominant 32-6 defeat of Gold Coast without a handful of Maroons stars. Scott Drinkwater’s fullback renaissance continued and the 9-4 Cowboys’ fill-ins were excellent.

Todd Payten has named the same 17, with Valentine Holmes, Jeremiah Nanai, Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter to be assessed post-Origin with this fixture only 48 hours after the series opener.

St George Illawarra, which had its bye last weekend, has named Queensland hooker and Dally M leader Ben Hunt to back up at halfback and NSW back-rower Tariq Sims in the starting pack.

The 6-6 Dragons are on the cusp of the Top 8 after winning five of their last seven. But they have unmistakably picked off the low-hanging fruit – an Anzac Day upset of the Roosters is their only victory over a team currently higher than 12th.

The Saints made hard work of wins over the Warriors (24-18) and Bulldogs (34-24) in their last two. On the plus side, Cody Ramsey’s shift to fullback has been a slam-dunk, while Zac Lomax is in devastating touch.

The teams split their 2021 encounters: St George Illawarra got up 25-18 in Townsville in Round 2, while North Queensland bagged a 38-26 late-season victory in Rockhampton.

The Cowboys boast the second-best defence in the NRL and have scored 30-plus points in six of their past seven. The Origin factor plays into the Dragons’ hands (Hunt’s availability pending) but the Cowboys will be confident in their back-up players doing the job again if required.

Four of the six 2022 visitors to Townsville have managed just one try. The line is surprisingly big (14 points) but the hosts are absolutely flying and should get the job done.
