Preview:
The battling Broncos travel to the Hunter looking for a win to get their season back on track after a 5-8 start to the season. They run into a Knights side that has been in hot form, winning five of their past six games. Both sides lost last time out, with Newcastle falling 34-4 to the Storm in Melbourne, while the Broncos were embarrassed 38-10 by the Broncos.
Broncos coach Anthony Seibold doesn’t have much squad depth to rotate through, with hooker Andrew McCullough back into the starting team. Jamayne Issako is out, replaced by Richie Kennar, while one time Queensland Origin rep Joe Ofahengaue is back on the bench. For Newcastle, second rower Mitch Barnett’s suspension means Sione Mata’utia gets a starting gig. David Klemmer is listed among their reserves, as is Aidan Guerra who hasn’t played since round 5.
Newcastle won the only encounter between the two last season, 15-10. Prior to that, Brisbane won seven on the trot. This is a different Knights side though and with Kalyn Ponga underperforming in the past couple of weeks, look for him to put in a big showing. The enthusiastic home crowd will pack the stands for this one and they will be worth at least a couple of points come Saturday night. The Wolf is steering clear of the tumbling and battered Broncos.
