Tom Trbojevic can’t return for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles soon enough. As expected, they barely threw a punch without him as the Roosters made their 46-4 win look easy last week. While Manly drew one of the shorter straws in the NRL to be put up against the Roosters in Round 1, it’s a concerning start for a club that has just extended the coach for another two seasons. The straw only gets shorter in Round 2 with a smarting South Sydney Rabbitohs side visiting Lottoland.
Run off their feet by the Storm in the first half last week, the Rabbitohs answered back in the second. They displayed enough with the ball in hand – when they held onto it – to suggest that points won’t be too difficult to come by on Saturday afternoon given what Manly dished up in their season-opener. Josh Mansour has been dropped for Jaxson Paulo and Jacob Host loses his spot in the backrow to Keaon Koloamatangi. They are bold changes for Mansour and Host, but the sort Wayne Bennett can afford to make. He has a list of reliable replacements and can still send out one of the best 17’s in the NRL despite dropping two offseason signings.
Manly have struggled in the middle recently. It’s an area Souths can, and should, dominate from the opening whistle. From there, Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker and company can get into their work. Des Hasler is safe in his job after reportedly signing an extension, but he might not enjoy it on Saturday evening.
