Gold Coast Titans vs Penrith Panthers Preview

An injury-hit Gold Coast side with only pride to play for hosts a Penrith outfit that must keep winning to hold off Brisbane for the minor premiership.

The Titans have lost six of their last seven and look to have run out of puff. After a stunning upset of the Cowboys and a gutsy 12-man loss to the Warriors, they were pumped 36-6 at Cronulla last Friday despite the boost of Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and David Fifita contract news.

Jayden Campbell moves to five-eighth with Kieran Foran injured, which sees Keano Kini named at fullback – though AJ Brimson lurks in the reserves. Thomas Weaver will debut at halfback with Tanah Boyd ruled out for the year. Moeaki Fotuaika is back from suspension, bumping Erin Clark out.

The Panthers keep rolling on, winning 12 of their last 13 with Thursday’s scrappy 24-12 win over Manly their seventh in a row. After losing Jarome Luai and Mitch Kenny late in the week, the premiers were well below their best but nevertheless grinded out another W on the back of their defensive excellence.

Luai and Kenny return on Saturday, as does the suspended Tyrone Peachey. Jack Cogger and Zac Hosking drop out of the 17.

The Titans have won just one of their last nine against the Panthers, losing the last four by an average margin of 20 points while scoring only eight points per game. Last season’s sole encounter saw the premiers prevail 18-4 on the Gold Coast.

Despite their position and injuries, I can’t see the Titans rolling over at home. A 22.5-point start is far too generous, and while the Panthers are giving up a miserly 12 points per game, the Titans have scored 18-plus in every game at Cbus Super Stadium in 2023.
