The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks had their moments last week. Still, the 32-18 final scoreline flatters them. Inconsistent across the 80 minutes and still vulnerable defensively through the middle, few teams make for a worse matchup than the Canberra Raiders.
The Raiders stuck with it after a slow start last week. They came out of the sheds a different team and piled up the points to earn a convincing 30-12 win over the Tigers. Canberra does a lot of their damage through the middle, especially now with Josh Hodgson directing traffic from behind the ruck. Josh Papalii and Dunamis Lui do the hard work before Hudson Young either cuts back in as a lead runner or Joseph Tapine skips across the field to destabilise the defensive line. Jack Wighton and George Williams then have their way in attack.
This is a classy Raiders outfit. While the Sharks can be encouraged by last week, they’re a level or two below their opponents for Round 2. They don’t appear to have the improvement in them to compete with the top four or five teams in the NRL until Shaun Johnson returns. That is still at least a month away. Like the Panthers, the Raiders can be trusted against these lower teams.
