Canterbury Bulldogs vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Preview

The traditional Good Friday afternoon clash shapes as the most even in years with 3-2 Canterbury’s tails up and 2-3 Souths desperate for a win.

The Bulldogs buried the disappointment of losing a lead in Auckland in Round 4 by pulling off an incredible golden point win against the Cowboys last Sunday. Matt Burton and Josh Addo-Carr were the big-play heroes, but young guns Jacob Kiraz, Jacob Preston and Paul Alamoti again shone.

Souths have been involved in a string of tight games against good teams, going down to the Panthers and Roosters, edging Manly in golden point and falling short against the Storm last Friday.

The latter was probably their most disappointing effort of the season, with the likes of Latrell Mitchell failing to fire on the back of outstanding grunt work from Cameron Murray and Tom Burgess.

The Bulldogs’ forward depth is being strenuously tested with Raymond Faitala-Mariner, Franklin Pele and Jayden Okunbor joining late Round 5 withdrawal Viliame Kikau on the sidelines. Harrison Edwards, Jackson Topine and Jayden Tanner come into the 17 this week.

Souths get Tevita Tatola back from injury, while Taane Milne will replace Alex Johnston (concussion) on the wing.

Souths have won nine of the last 11 clashes between the old Sydney rivals, including the last four straight while scoring at least 32 points.

Last season the Rabbitohs won 36-16 in Round 6 – with Damien Cook scoring a hat-trick – and 36-28 in Round 18. Johnston scored five tries across the two games. Souths have won the last four Easter showdowns by an average margin of 15 points.

Souths’ best remains considerably better than Canterbury’s – and the Bulldogs’ injury toll is a concern. But the Bulldogs are playing with plenty of flair and spirit under Cameron Ciraldo and should lift in front of a big holiday crowd.

Something’s not quite clicking for the Rabbitohs and they look well under the odds as $1.30 favourites.
