St Kilda Saints vs Brisbane Lions Preview

Two sides with plenty left to prove meet under the roof on Friday night.

With three losses from their last five games, the Saints’ top-four plight feels like a distant memory now.

A 20-point loss to Richmond last week highlighted some of the flaws in Ross Lyon’s defensive system, but perhaps more concerning was the fact Tim Taranto and Dustin Martin were allowed free possession of the Sherrin all night long.

Following a disappointing loss against Hawthorn the week prior, the Lions responded with a less-than-convincing win over the Swans.

Goal-kicking woes were at the forefront, alongside some average tackling and an overall effort that lacked what we’ve come to expect from a genuine flag contender.

The Lions have been a tough team to bet on away from home this year, but they do hold a terrific record at Marvel with six wins from their last seven visits.

Meanwhile, St Kilda’s lack of scoring is a genuine concern against a Brisbane forward line that can pile on points in a hurry – not to mention the fact the Lions have won four of their last five meetings.

That said, the Saints desperately need a win if they are to remain in the finals hunt, and they might be able to impact the scoreboard given Brisbane’s back-half woes of late.

The Lions still gave up 81 points to a Swans side missing Isaac Heeney and Buddy Franklin, a week removed from allowing 15 goals to Hawthorn.

With a handy 7-4 record at the line following a loss, Max King and Jack Higgins might just help the Saints bounce back.
