Geelong Cats vs Fremantle Dockers Preview
Chris Scott brings up game No. 305 as coach of Geelong on Saturday, surpassing club legend Reg Hickey as the all-time leader.
The Cats find themselves still inside the eight ahead of a favourable clash against the Dockers, but there’s no time to waste with a backlog of teams breathing down their necks.
Geelong was arguably the most disappointing team of Round 19, victims of a sluggish start against the Lions that has cast further doubt over a Premiership repeat.
To their credit, the Cats had some late chances and lost by only 11 points, but the real story was told on the stat sheet as the Lions dominated the inside 50s, clearances, and contested possession numbers comfortably.
Fortunately, the footy gods have blessed Geelong with an opportune home game against out of sorts Fremantle.
With a bottom four finish beckoning, the Dockers have some serious issues to address looking ahead to next year, starting with the fact they simply can’t seem to find points.
Whether Justin Longmuir has lost the playing group remains to be seen, but after winning a final last year, Freo might be leading the charge for most disappointing club in season 2023.
The Cats have made a habit of bouncing back from poor defeats for what feels like two decades now, and given the narrative around Scott, plus the fact their season is basically on the line from here on out, it’s hard to see Geelong not winning this by a decent margin.
