Fremantle Dockers vs Essendon Bombers Preview

Two clubs with an eye on the ladder meet on Saturday for what should be a tell-all contest.

Looking back to last week, it’s hard to argue for Fremantle not being the most disappointing team.

The Dockers’ 70-point defeat was their largest under the tenure of Justin Longmuir, a failure of epic proportions from start to finish. Not for the first time, Freo failed to turn up for the first quarter, finding themselves on the back-foot early with no chance to come back.

Now, a well-rested Essendon team is in town – the Bombers not only looking to make it five wins in a row, but also cement their spot in the finals even further.

Peter Wright was an enormous boost to the forward line in the Round 13 win over Carlton, while Brad Scott’s young list continues to show real signs of development, led by Mason Redman, Nic Martin, and Tex Wanganeen.

On one hand, you could argue the bye disrupted some of Fremantle’s momentum, but their overall forward structure still poses serious questions with no real talent outside of Michael Frederick and Jye Amiss.

Essendon aren’t a team that put up big scoring numbers, but they can play spirited quarters of footy at a moment’s notice – like they did in the third term against the Blues.

Ironically, the Bombers have been one of the better first-quarter teams this year, a big problem for a Freo side that has won the first term only once in its 13 games.

With both sides struggling to impact the scoreboard, a low-scoring game could be on the cards – the argument made only more compelling with the Under saluting in their last five meetings.
