Brisbane Lions have reclaimed a share of the AFL competition lead with back-to-back wins over Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne. But their recent form has lacked consistency, and last weekend’s one-point victory over the struggling Kangaroos should have been a wake-up call.

The Lions’ inaccuracy was a sore point with coach Chris Fagan after the 7.11 (53) to 8.4 (52) scare. Midfield trio Jarryd Lyons, Dayne Zorko and Lachie Neale were in great touch, but Brisbane are battling in front of goal – kicking more behinds than goals for the seventh time in their past 10 outings.

St Kilda Saints are tied for third (fifth on percentages) and responded strongly to a potentially confidence-sapping 59-point loss to the Cats in round 11, disposing of the Bombers 10.8 (68) to 5.3 (33) six days later.

Rookie Max King kicked three goals, while Zak Jones, Jack Steele and Jack Billings were all busy in the midfield.

The Saints have won four of their last five against the Lions but lost this fixture by 56 points last season, with Charlie Cameron kicking five goals and Lyons (2 goals, 24 disposals) also starring.

Cameron has been ineffective while hampered by a knee injury – and Brisbane need him back to somewhere near his best to help ease the team’s goal-kicking woes. That uncertainty holds St Kilda in good stead, despite being a pronounced underdog in AFL round 13 tips and odds.
