The 47th Showdown pits the Crows and Power against each other once more, with the Crows leading the all-time head to head 24-22. The Crows have had the better of this meeting in recent times, winning 7 of the past 8 Showdowns. In round 8 this season, they got the chocolates by 20 points, but had to withstand a furious rally the Power late after opening up a 38-point three-quarter time lead. Out of favour Port midfielder Tom Rockliff had 41 touches on that night and is coming off a monster 57 disposal performance in the SANFL last weekend, so look for him to get a start this weekend.
Last week’s shock loss to the Dogs in horrendous conditions is sure to produce a number of changes by Ken Hinkley, with the experience of Justin Westhoff and Paddy2 Ryder likely to be called upon for this Showdown clash. The Crows played well for a half against the Cats in Geelong last Friday night, but were overpowered in the second stanza, losing by 27 points.
The Power are doing plenty right this season, leading the league in contested possession, tackles and clearances. Where they have fallen down is losing to sides they should beat, and springing the odd upset when they’re outsiders. Neither side will be short of motivation in this one, and The Wolf can’t help but back the underdog Power in a game that is a toss of the coin to pick, particularly given how strong they’ve been at winning hard ball this season.
