A top eight clash opens the round in Adelaide when the Crows host the Bombers. Both sides are coming off wins in round 17, with Adelaide thumping the Suns by 95 points to record their biggest win of the season, while the Bombers escaped with a five-point win against North. It was a training drill for the Crows against Gold Coast, with Eddie Betts booting six goals as one of five multiple goal kickers. The win was a big boost to the Crows’ percentage and moves them up to 7th on the ladder. A goal from Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti with just 20 seconds left on the clock was enough for the Bombers to snatch victory from North in a pulsating and close match at Marvel Stadium. Essendon’s season is gathering momentum with the Dons winning their past three matches to move into 8th spot on the ladder.
When the two sides met in round 1 last year, Essendon needed a six goals to one final term to overrun the Crows and win by two goals, after Adelaide had a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. This is their first meeting this season, with the Bombers needing to overcome a mediocre record in Adelaide.
The Dons are 2-3 at the Adelaide Oval all time, but in those five matches they are scoring on average, six goals less per game than their opposition. The Crows have won four of their past five against the Dons, with both Essendon and Adelaide 8-8 against the handicap this season. The Crows are just 4-5 at home on the line though, meanwhile Essendon is 0-3 in interstate games, losing at the SCG, Giants Stadium and Optus Stadium. There isn’t much to separate these two on paper, and the Crows’ up and down form in the past month makes them a risky proposition for The Wolf, so I’m backing the Bombers to snare a season defining win.
