Australia vs Bangladesh Preview
Australia are walking the tightrope towards the T20 World Cup semi-finals following a convincing loss to England. A victory over Bangladesh on Thursday is essential – and a net run-rate boost would be more than handy as South Africa continue to apply pressure in Group 1.
There were few positives to draw from Saturday’s eight-wicket loss to in-form England. After slumping to 4/21, Australia scratched their way to a total of 125. Aaron Finch top-scored with a painstaking 44 off 49 balls.
England cruised home with 50 balls to spare. Ashton Agar (1/15) was the only Aussie bowler to go for less than nine an over.
Australia had started the tournament solidly, beating South Africa by 5 wickets and Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. David Warner (65 off 42), Finch (37 off 23) and Adam Zampa (2/12) shone in the latter win.
Qualifiers Bangladesh are well out of contention ahead of their last group match, going 0-4 so far. They were sporadically competitive in losses to Sri Lanka (5 wickets), England (8 wickets) and West Indies (3 runs), before being bowled out for just 84 in a crushing 6-wicket defeat to South Africa on Tuesday.
While Australia’s line-up is vastly different, Bangladesh will take plenty of confidence from their crushing 4-1 home T20I series win three months ago. The Tigers had never beaten the Aussies in the format previously but were sensational throughout, especially with the ball. Shakib Al Hasan claimed Player of the Series honours with 114 runs and 7 wickets.
The conditions in Dubai will more favourable to Australia than those in Dhaka. But Bangladesh will nevertheless aim to bring their opponents undone with a potent spin arsenal once again.
Australia are resounding $1.19 favourites to stay on course for the semis with a win here. A strong start from their openers is key, but Steve Smith – who began the tournament brightly with scores of 35 and 28* – is a player they’ll be looking for to lift after being dismissed for 1 by England.
