Australia crushed ‘little brother’ by 296 runs in Perth in the series opener. Not a lot went New Zealand’s way: losing the toss was crucial, while an injury to debutant Lockie Ferguson – a replacement for pace spearhead Trent Boult – also hampered their ability to make inroads into the Australian batting order.
But the hosts, who put on 416 in the first innings, lost Josh Hazlewood at a similar stage. That didn’t stop them from dismissing the Black Caps for a paltry 166 and 171. Mitchell Starc’s nine wickets edged No.3 batting phenom Marnus Labuschagne (143 and 50) for man-of-the-match honours.
Ross Taylor’s first-innings 80 was New Zealand’s only half-century. The biggest positives from an individual standout were the lionhearted efforts of bowlers Tim Southee and Neil Wagner, who took nine and seven wickets respectively.
