Wests Tigers vs Parramatta Eels Preview

This time last year Wests Tigers were in an eerily similar predicament, heading into Easter 0-5, pilloried in the press, involved in some of the most unwatchable games in recent memory and coming off a heavy defeat to one of the NRL’s big guns after earlier showing some resolve in defence.

The Tigers enjoyed a mini-revival with a gallant 21-20 upset of Parramatta on Easter Monday…but is doubtful they have a Jackson Hastings-esque hero in their ranks this time around.

After a limp 46-12 loss in Brisbane, Adam Doueihi switches from fullback to partner the embattled Luke Brooks in the halves, Charlie Staines dons the No.1 jersey and Brent Naden returns from illness at centre. The idiom ‘shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic’ springs to mind.

The Eels, though, are at a much lower point than 12 months ago. The 2022 grand finalists have just one win on the board – though they’ve had a brutal draw, pitted against a quality team coming off the bye for three straight Thursdays.

After a superb 17-16 golden point eclipse of Penrith, the blue-and-golds were pancake-flat against the Roosters and only added respectability to a 28-20 final scoreline with a couple of late tries.

Shaun Lane returns in a big boost for the Eels, while Haze Dunster and Sean Russell come into the backline for Bailey Simonsson (suspended) and Waqa Blake (dropped).

Last year’s thriller was the Tigers’ only win over the Eels in their last nine encounters. Parramatta responded later in 2022 with a 28-20 win at Leichhardt Oval in Round 17. The Eels average 30.3 points in their last 10 games against the Tigers.

A repeat of the 2022 Easter Miracle seems far-fetched, but the Eels are perhaps being a bit overestimated giving away 13.5 points at the line. Consider the over in what has been a traditionally free-flowing encounter, with the Eels to ultimately finish on top.
