The Penrith Panthers had a shocker in 2019. It doesn’t get any easier in 2020 with the Sydney Roosters the first opposing team in a tough opening stretch of games. Nathan Cleary has assumed total control of the side in the wake of James Maloney’s departure. He has Api Koroisau feeding him from hooker – an upgrade on 2019 and a potentially lethal combination in 2020. The Panthers need to be a lot more consistent in attack if they’re to crack the Top 8. They’ll need to get straight into it this week against 2019’s best defensive team.
As back-to-back NRL premiers, the Roosters come into the season as favourites. It’s not a tag that will apply quite to heavily to the regular season, though. They’ve made their intentions clear by resting Boyd Cordner for the first game of a new season. While still the best team on paper most weeks, the Roosters won’t hit their straps until later in the season. It’s an ideal time for a team like the Panthers to come in and swoop on the unexpected two competition points.
