Parramatta Eels vs Manly Sea Eagles Preview

Parramatta Eels are searching for their fourth straight win when they host Manly on Saturday, which would also see the blue-and-golds leapfrog the Sea Eagles into the Top 8 for the first time this season. But both sides are navigating big spine changes this week.

A week after making his club debut at five-eighth, Daejarn Asi will wear Mitchell Moses’ No.7 with Ryan Matterson to partner him in the halves with Dylan Brown stood down. Ofahiki Ogden grabs a starting front-row spot and Joe Ofahenague returns on the bench with Junior Paulo on Origin duty.

Ex-Eel Jake Arthur has been pitched into the Manly halfback hotseat Kaeo Weekes slots in at fullback as Daly Cherry-Evans and Tom Trbojevic prepare for game two.

Following their stunning 36-16 win over Souths, the Eels successfully picked off low-hanging fruit either side of the bye with victories over an Origin-hit North Queensland side 24-16 and a dominant 34-12 defeat of Canterbury 34-12 on Monday.

Despite winning only one of their previous five, the Sea Eagles returned to the Top 8 after following their Round 14 bye up with a spectacular 58-18 drubbing of the Dolphins at home. Rebuen Garrick scored a hat-trick from his new centre spot, while Trbojevic, Jason Saab and Tolutau Koula bagged doubles.

Manly won a high-scorer in Round 3, holding off fast-finishing Parramatta 34-30 at home. The Eels won both encounters last season: 22-20 at CommBank in Round 11 and 36-20 at Brookvale in Round 21.

The Eels are on a five-day turnaround while the Sea Eagles will have had eight days to prepare for this one. Manly have won just two of seven on the road this season and a lack of direction in a 28-18 defeat at Newcastle without DCE and ‘Turbo’ before Origin I makes them hard to get behind here.

Clint Gutherson shoulders plenty of responsibility as the only member of a first-choice Parramatta spine on deck but he invariably lifts against his former club, while Regan Campbell-Gillard’s return last week is a huge boost to their chances of keeping the winning run going.
