North Queensland Cowboys vs Wests Tigers Preview
North Queensland retained second spot despite their Origin-weakened line-up’s 26-12 loss to in-form Cronulla last Friday. It was a plucky effort from the Cowboys hampered by a rough Bunker call and again underlined their excellent depth.
Queensland reps Valentine Holmes, Tom Dearden, Jeremiah Nanai and Murray Tualagi are all back this week.
Wests Tigers are still searching for their first win under caretaker Brett Kimmorley, extending their losing streak to six matches with an 18-16 loss to half a Penrith side. The experiment with Jackson Hastings at lock and Adam Doueihi returning to five-eighth didn’t work, but has been persisted with.
Brent Naden (suspension) is back on the wing, Tyrone Peachey and Alex Seyfarth are on the bench, and James Roberts and David Nofoaluma are a chance of returning from illness after being included in the reserves.
The Tigers have won five of their last seven against the Cowboys and their last three in Townsville. But the Cowboys’ 36-12 Magic Round drubbing of the joint venture perfectly encapsulates where both clubs are in 2022.
This is a gift-wrapped two points for the Cowboys and invaluable to their Top 4 bid as the ladder tightens up. Ten of their 12 wins this season have come by 13-plus margins. It’s hard to say anything positive about where the Tigers are going – and it certainly won’t be off the bottom of the ladder with a Townsville boilover.
