Another decisive encounter with in-form Newcastle in outright seventh spot, one point ahead of stumbling heavyweight South Sydney.

The Knights extended their stunning winning streak to six matches with a 42-6 thrashing of the Bulldogs, their back-five once again in a dominant mood. They are chasing seven in a row for the first time since winning the comp in 2001.

Jackson Hastings has been cleared of serious injury after leaving the field last week and will play on Sunday, while Bradman Best returns from an abductor problem for an unlucky Enari Tuala.

Souths are still struggling to bust out of their injury-hampered mid-season funk. Stuck in the starting blocks in a 26-16 loss to Cronulla in Perth in Round 23, the Rabbitohs bumbled their way to the ugliest of 26-14 wins over the Dragons in Cairns last Saturday.

There were glimpses from Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker, but they drifted in and out of a game that was ripe for them to take by the scruff of the neck. Souths’ only change sees Michael Chee-Kam replace Ben Lovett on the bench. Hame Sele and Tevita Tatola are among the reserves.

Souths have won 12 of their last 14 against Newcastle, including a 40-28 away win in their only 2022 meeting. The Knights’ last home win over the Rabbitohs was back in 2011.

Two months ago it would have been inconceivable that the Knights would be as short as $2.05 to topple the Rabbitohs – but such is the quality of their football and the scalps they’ve taken, the hosts look good value to salute in front of a packed house in Newcastle.
